In its latest update on the containership MOL Comfort
, the Japanese liner company MOL said that firefighters have been unable to bring a fire under control on the section that remains afloat because of adverse weather.
The ships fractured in two parts on June 17. The aft section of the ship sank 10 days later. As the fore section was being towed to a port for salvage, a fire broke out on July 6.
Tugs and an Indian Coast Guard patrol boat, Samudra Prahari
, were still working to extinguish the blaze at 12:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday morning, but MOL said "observations show that most of the containers on deck have been burnt out, while we have not been able to confirm the situation in the cargo hold." - Chris Dupin
