Container volume at the Port of Virginia rose 1.5 percent year-on-year in October, aided by strong growth in exports.
Export volume rose 5.5 percent to 96,090 TEUs, offsetting a 3 percent drop in exports to 79,240 TEUs. Overall volume reached 175,330 TEUs.
In terms of tonnage, volume rose 4.3 percent during the month, despite breakbulk tonnage falling 12.3 percent to 25,314 tons. Container tonnage rose 4.7 percent to nearly 1.4 million tons. The number of ship calls fell from 165 in October 2011 to 158 this October.
For the year, Virginia’s total container volume has grown 7.6 percent to 1.7 million TEUs. - Eric Johnson
