Thieves hit a last-mile courier van carrying pharmaceuticals in Modesto, Calif., Thursday, taking cargo from the van while the driver was out making a delivery.
The last pharmaceutical theft in California north of Los Angeles occurred in 2011, according to FreightWatch International. This year, there have been four pharmaceutical thefts in the Los Angeles area.
According to the firm, last-mile courier thefts are developing into a trend. Nearly 30 have occurred in the U.S. so far this year, with the majority happening in and around Detroit. In 2012, the company recorded 12 last-mile courier thefts around the nation.
“FreightWatch recommends that all high value last-mile couriers
maintain extreme vigilance during deliveries and, if at all possible,
leave one person with the shipment at all times,” the company said in an
email to members. “FreightWatch also recommends parking in secured
areas not accessible to the public.” - Jon Ross
