Antonio Villaraigosa, mayor of Los Angeles, said at a press conference today that the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 63, Office Clerical Unit (OCU) and employers represented by the Los Angeles/Long Beach Harbor Employers Association have agreed to have a federal mediator assist them with their contract negotiations.
He said mediators from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service might become involved in the talks as early as today.
The 600 members of the OCU have been on strike for a week, and longshoremen in the port have been honoring their picket line, effectively shutting down 10 of the 14 terminals in the two ports.
The two ports handle the about a third of the nation’s container cargo.
However, the presence of a mediator may not bring an immediate end to the strike. - Chris Dupin
